Concept:
Parti: Curvilinear Circulation
This project is on UCLA’s Perloff Hall Courtyard. Our objectives for this project is to design the plaza to be accessible through ADA ramps & stairs at different elevations, and a flexible place for outdoor seating and etc.
For my design, I wanted to have a fun and interactive solution to travel around the courtyard, through curvilinear circulation.
This is my design precedence research. These are pictures that I chose that best represents my design intentions for this project. I have images showing my outdoor hallway design with arches and columns, to give off the feeling of an open spaces and a view of the courtyard. They’re other images that show outdoor seating with curved benches and shaded areas by trees. I also wanted to have a water feature in the middle of the courtyard, and to use flagstone as the main hardscape to manage stormwater runoff.

This is my site analysis. As you can see i provided a small graphic location map, so you can see the scale of perloff hall as relation to the entire UCLA campus. I analysed that the courtyard would be surrounded by three connecting streets that would give off road noise,  Since this map is facing north, i am showing a sun path that has the sun that rises in the east and sets in the west. And one entrance that would have prevailing winds coming through

My plan has entries that are all ADA compliant and meet federal and state requirements. The ramps are all at an 8.33% slope, that is accessible through different elevations through the courtyard. They have a steel guardrail and handrail at both sides of the ramp at 30-38” high, a bottom railing at 4” high, and a width of 3-4’.

I used three different hardscapes for my plan, as not to overwhelmed it with materials. I used concrete on the sidewalk/hallway to be a simple walking surface, that goes easily with wheelchairs and crutches. I am using small and large flagstone inside the open courtyard, the small flagstones are going to be mortared in place where people are traveling to be ADA accessible. The main usage of this hardscape material is that it would be useful to manage stormwater runoff.

For seating, I provided curved wooden benches that go along with the aesthetic, and I have movable furniture, that can be used for outdoor seating and classrooms but can be pushed away for events. And the back wall can be used as an outdoor gallery to hang art, as that area is secluded. I included a water feature, a reflective pond, to be the middle and heart of the courtyard.
For planting, I used drought-tolerant plants and trees that are native to California and grow best in zone 10b. I used several plants and trees ranging from Aloe vera to Desert Willows.
